June 9, 2008With a Denver district court judge’s recent ruling that a mill levy freeze amounts to an unconstitutional tax increase, Republicans are hoping the decision will bode well for GOP candidates this November who can point to the fact that all Democrat incumbent lawmakers voted in favor of the tax hike. The mill levy freeze is a particularly sensitive issue in Mesa County, where county commissioners signed on as lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Anti-petition Romanoff now attempts to petition tax increase on to Nov. ballot

May 6, 2008After his fellow lawmakers declined to back his latest tax increase proposal, House Speaker Andrew Romanoff is resorting to the citizen's initiative process to see his plan onto this November's ballot. It's an ironic move, according to petition rights advocates, because Romanoff has been one of the most outspoken opponents of petition rights in the past.

The effect, they charge, could have a devastating impact on an industry key to helping ensure that Colorado avoids much of the economic turmoil plaguing the rest of the nation.
