Timeline: Ritter Flip-flops on Budget

Throughout 2008, Gov. Bill Ritter advocated for growing the budget and spent his summer campaigning for tax increases. He only more recently acknowledged the dire fiscal shortages facing the state.

"OK, so I couldn't stay away from politics, but this is too good to pass up.

The state is projected to be $631 million short next year. That is 9% of the budget and is happening because of the downturn in the economy. Keep in mind that Ref C will still be in effect and that the state will be collecting the unconstitutional property tax.

What if Amendment 59 had passed? If that had happened, the carefree legislature would have simply raised taxes by 10% and gone on spending."

Rep. Bruce may be eccentric, but he's right on TABOR

bruce-safety clause

Outgoing Rep. Doug Bruce, R-Colorado Springs, may be bitter, but he’s right.

In a Wednesday e-mail to reporters and a group of fellow state lawmakers, Bruce calls out the Denver Post editorial board for lying about his baby, better known as the Taxpayers Bill of Rights.

Ultimately this election is not about who hangs out with domestic terrorists, who shops at Saks Fifth Avenue, or who thinks “jobs” is a three letter word. Ultimately, this election is about freedom and whether people are willing to give it away.

Initiative campaigns' final pitch for your vote

Mail-in ballots have been trickling back to County Clerks' offices, and early voting began Monday with record turnout. Face the State gave each of 10 remaining ballot initiatives the opportunity to write a short column explaining why voters should support or oppose each measure.

"The Rocky Mountain News printed my letter to the editor earlier this week about Colorado Amendment 59. Click here for the on-line version with reader comments.

A DIFFERING VIEW: Count on taxes rising if Amendment 59 passes

The Rocky should regret endorsing the deceptive Amendment 59 (editorial, Sept. 19).

Like other proponents, the Rocky claims that 59 “is not a tax hike.” The Rocky continues, “it would eliminate rebates that taxpayers otherwise would receive whenever a [Taxpayer's Bill of Rights] surplus occurs.”"

""Vote No on Amendment 59" describes what the measure would do -- and why it's a bad idea. As Diana points out, one problem with the measure is that it would expand political control of other areas. Hsieh's page against 48 summarizes the paper that she and I wrote, "Amendment 48 Is Anti-Life," and links to related letters, releases, and articles.

For her work Diana deserves the praise of all Coloradans who care about liberty."

"Another People’s Press Collective dedicated reader just sent us a copy of Protect Colorado’s Culture of Corruption Future’s latest dishonest mailer that’s dripping with more fear mongering. You won’t be surprised that they’re still abusing Colorado’s real heroes as puppets for their elaborate LIES."

Liberal ballot 'education' event draws fire

Representatives from Colorado’s liberal non-profits gathered for the first of several “educational” forums, during which speakers advocated for or against the different measures on this November’s ballot. The speakers went unchallenged and according to some campaign representatives, provided false information to attendees. While 35 organizations heavily promoted the event, only about 50 people came to forum held in Sturm Hall at the University of Denver Tuesday night.
