12/2: Olympics in Colorado?

Colorado was awarded - and then rejected - the Olympics in 1976. But there’s a fresh push to try again.

More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.

Gov. Bill Ritter, back stateside after a junket through Asia, is talking about bringing the winter Olympic games to Colorado. His logic is, if Chicago loses its bid for the 2016 summer games, Denver should throw its hat in the ring for 2018.

That would be quite an about-face, given voters rejected the games in 1976, making us the first host city to say “no, thanks” in Olympic history.

Let me be the first to say this is a bad idea. The Olympics are a wonderful event, but a serious drain on public resources and generally a wash for economic development. Our tourism industry can stand on its own without a big international event. Radical environmentalism spiked the 1976 games; common sense should prevail this time around.
