Do chambers of commerce really stand up for the best interest of small businesses?
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
You may have heard about recent negotiations between the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and big labor unions. That’s not an alliance you might expect out of a group which ostensibly stands for the best interests of the business community. But local chambers of commerce throughout Colorado are signing on to tax increases and backing increased regulations that make it hard to post a profit.
I’m pleased to report at least one chamber is fighting that trend. The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce recently endorsed Laura Bradford, a Republican challenging incumbent Rep. B0ernie Buescher. Chamber leaders say Buescher doesn’t vote to create a business-friendly environment in the state. They cited his support of restrictive energy regulations and higher property taxes as a reason for him to step aside for some new blood.
Mesa County’s counterparts on the Front Range may want to take notes on the proper definition of “pro-business.”
