Who’s really campaigning for your vote? The candidates on the ballot, or the shadowy groups bombarding your mailbox?
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
Candidates for political office are busy knocking on doors and hitting the phones in the mad dash toward election day.
The only problem is, most of the information Joe Voter will receive won’t come from the campaigns, but rather from shadowy groups spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence the election. What’s worse, it’s illegal for candidates to influence those communications. In the end, candidates lose control of their own campaigns and voters end up confused and frustrated.
Rather than driving big money interests away from politics, campaign finance laws have served only to concentrate political power far away from the average citizen and into the hands of the connected and wealthy political elite. The ads flooding your mailbox are symptoms of very broken campaign law.
