8/8: Spoiled protesters?

Are protesters targeting this month’s Democrat convention being spoiled by the city? I’m being serious!

More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.

Vincent Carroll, editorial page editor of the Rocky Mountain News, recently threw out an unorthodox theory, but I think it makes a lot of sense. For all the carping we hear from protesters covering this month’s Democrat convention, they really are enjoying unprecedented protections and access.

Even after some protest groups announced they’d push city rules and regulations to the limits, Denver’s civic leaders are trying to find ways to accommodate huge numbers of protesters. They’re even providing the PA systems dissidents will use to spread their message at the DNC.

Politics is a game of balancing many competing interests. Conventioneers deserve a meeting where they’re not constantly harassed, but protesters have a free speech right in public, too. Denver’s management has been far from perfect, but a recent lawsuit against the city claiming trampled free speech is disingenuous.
