7/1: Monorail to Vail?

I-70 ski traffic drives me crazy. But is a train the answer?

More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.

In the fictional world of the Simpsons, con-man Lyle Lanley sells the town of Springfield a wildly expensive monorail that gets built at the expense of pothole repair on Main Street.

Colorado is stumbling into its own monorail debacle, and it’s even an election issue in the mountains, where locals are rightly frustrated with a lack of solutions to congestion on I-70.

Ali Hasan, the Republican candidate in House District 56, promises to push legislative action for the construction of an elevated train from Denver to Vail. He estimates the cost of such a project to be at least 4 billion dollars. I think the cost could be much more, and private funding is slow to materialize.

If he wins, Hasan will face a long road in convincing legislators and voters to pay for such a huge project. Let’s just hope it works out better than in the Simpsons.
