Secretary of State Mike Coffman's recent win of the Republican Nomination in the 6th Congressional District opens the door for Gov. Bill Ritter to nominate a Democrat to take the state elections post should Coffman win the general election. Some GOP activists aren't happy with that scenario and are pushing for Coffman to resign, forcing an election this November.
Should he serve through this year's election and then leave the post, a Ritter appointee would serve from January 2008 through 2010.

FTS Staff Writer Rachel Boxer visits with Managing Editor Brad Jones to discuss her recent story outlining Coffman's options. In either case, a Ritter appointee would serve some period of time as Secretary of State. A name often mentioned by political insiders for the appointment is Senate Minority Leader Ken Gordon, who ran against Coffman in 2006.
