Three national polls released over the past week show that the contest to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard remains tight.

A Friday poll released by National Journal showed Democrat Mark Udall at 41 percent and Republican Bob Schaffer at 38 percent.

By Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal had Udall up 48-40. And the next day, a Rasmussen poll showed Udall at 46 percent and Schaffer at 44 percent.

An August Rasmussen poll predicted a strong performance for Republicans in November, with the vast majority of voters aligning with Schaffer's energy-friendly positions and support for domestic oil exploration. In July, Rasmussen showed the Senate race within the margin of error, with Udall up 47 to Schaffer's 43.

While this has been one of the nation's tightest and most watched races of 2008, Schaffer has never taken a lead over Udall. Both candidates must also deal with the presence of two long-shot hopefuls threatening to siphon voter support. Buddy Moore is running as an independent and Bob Kinsey is running on the Green Party ticket. August polling by the Rocky Mountain News showed Moore and Kinsey earning 7 percent of voters' support.
